Dry Needling as part of your Physiotherapy intervention
Do you suffer from:
Tension-type headaches, low back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain or fibromyalgia?
Research indicates that dry needling can effectively reduce pain intensity, improve range of motion, and enhance muscle function.
What is Dry Needling?
Dry Needling is a treatment that targets myofascial trigger points with thin, sterile needles. It’s a safe, minimally invasive method designed to alleviate muscle tension and pain
Why Choose Dry Needling?
Fast Relief: Many patients report instant improvement in muscle mobility and a significant reduction in pain.
Drug-Free Treatment: A natural approach to managing pain without the need for medication.
Enhanced Recovery: Accelerates tissue repair and reduces inflammation related to various conditions like tendonitis.
Precision Targeting: Reaches deeper muscles than traditional massage or soft tissue mobilization techniques
Dry needling can provide significant pain relief and functional improvement, particularly when integrated with comprehensive physiotherapy interventions.
Dry Needling Background
Dry needling, also known as Western dry needling, is a treatment technique used by physiotherapists and can form part of a treatment session. It involves the use of solid filiform needles for therapy of muscle pain, including pain related to myofascial pain syndrome. It can used to treat dysfunction of skeletal muscle and connective tissue, minimize pain, and improve or regulate structural or functional damage.
The term “dry needling” was attributed to Janet G. Travell, who differentiated between two hypodermic needle techniques when performing trigger point therapy. These techniques involved the injection of a local anaesthetic and the mechanical use of a hypodermic needle without injecting a solution. While some consider dry needling as a variation of trigger point injections, others maintain that it is adapted from acupuncture. However, the current techniques of dry needling are based on traditional and western medical acupuncture.
Dry needling has gained popularity among healthcare professionals for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. It is an evidence-based treatment technique widely accepted and used by various health professionals. It focuses on releasing or inactivating muscular trigger points to reduce pain, alleviate muscle tension, and facilitate patients’ return to active rehabilitation.
Efficacy of Dry Needling:
Numerous studies have explored the efficacy of dry needling across various musculoskeletal conditions, including myofascial pain syndrome, tension-type headaches, low back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain and fibromyalgia. Research indicates that dry needling can effectively reduce pain intensity, improve range of motion, and enhance muscle function. Studies have demonstrated significant short-term pain relief and functional improvement following dry needling interventions and when combined with other physiotherapy modalities yielded superior outcomes compared to standalone interventions. Dry needling is a valuable therapeutic modality for managing musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Evidence suggests that dry needling can provide significant pain relief and functional improvement, particularly when integrated with comprehensive physiotherapy interventions.
